CPD for Nannies – Why Training Matters More Than Ever

When it comes to CPD for nannies, something has quietly shifted in the nanny industry.

The connection between training and career growth – once a given for serious childcare professionals – has become increasingly frayed. Post-COVID, experience became the only currency. Training took a back seat.

The result?
Nannies underinvest in themselves, families get less than they should, and industry standards drift downward.

πŸ€” This is an invitation to think differently around CPD for nannies

Experience is not a career strategy

Experience makes you more practised. Training makes you better.

There’s a difference. Together, they build a career that compounds over time.

The foundations β€” non-negotiable

Before we even talk about CPD for nannies, every nanny must have two things in place. Not nice-to-haves. Not optional extras. The absolute minimum required to work safely and professionally with children.

βœ… Enhanced DBS: Current, preferably on the Government Update Service. Families and agencies filter without it.

βœ… Paediatric First Aid: Specifically paediatric, renewed every two to three years. A core professional responsibility, not a one-off box tick.

Hearing nannies complain about the cost of these two things leaves me speechless. You look after little people whose parents trust you with the most precious thing in their lives. This is the bare minimum.

Core skills β€” and the scope is broader than you think

The range of learning available to nannies is genuinely exciting. Every new skill adds to your value, your confidence and your career.

Child development: Understanding how children grow at each stage transforms everything from how you play to how you talk to families.

Safeguarding: Know the signs. Know your responsibilities. Refresh it regularly.

Behaviour management: Studied approaches separate instinct from expertise.

Food hygiene: Get this certificate first. It’s straightforward and tells families you take the basics seriously.

Nutrition and meal planning: Building on food hygiene, understanding what children need nutritionally at each age is something families genuinely value.

SEND awareness: More families than ever are raising children with additional needs. Even foundational awareness makes you significantly more versatile.

Makaton: A communication system using signs and symbols alongside speech. Invaluable for children with communication difficulties, and increasingly valued more broadly.

Formal qualifications β€” credentials that open doors

Level 2 or 3 in Childcare: Foundational, demonstrates commitment, structured grounding in development and safeguarding.

Level 4 or 5 in Childcare, Early Years or Nannying: For nannies positioning themselves at the top of the market. A Level 5 commands real respect from high-end families and specialist agencies.

πŸ’― Qualifications make you easier to place, justify, and recommend. Agencies notice. Families notice.

Specialist training β€” where careers really accelerate

Specialist training builds on your foundational experience and takes it somewhere distinctive. This is where rates and opportunities open up significantly.

NICS (Newborn and Infant Care Specialist): One of the most in-demand specialisms in the industry. If you have any affinity for newborn care, this could be the best investment you make in your career.

Sleep Consultancy: Demand is significant and growing. Parents are frequently overwhelmed in this area, and a nanny who can support sleep confidently commands a genuine premium.

Montessori, Forest School, etc.: Knowledge of different childcare philosophies opens doors to families with specific needs who actively seek these credentials.

SEND | EYFS | Sports | Arts & Crafts | And so much more…: Every specialism is a conversation starter in interviews and a differentiator on your CV.

Ofsted Registration

Ofsted registration is shorthand for having your professional foundations properly in place.

It unlocks Tax-Free Childcare for families β€” making you more affordable and more attractive β€” and signals to every agency and family that you are serious about your profession.

A note for nannies earlier in their careers

Two or three years in and frustrated that the roles and rates you want aren’t coming?

Ask yourself honestly β€” what have you done in the last year to invest in yourself professionally?

Experience tells a family what you’ve done. Training tells them what you’re capable of. A junior nanny with an active CPD plan will always be more compelling than one with more years but no development plan.

Where to start

  • Check that your DBS and Paediatric First Aid are current
  • Get your food hygiene certificate
  • Identify the next logical qualification for where you are and where you want to be
  • Talk to your community for advice and guidance
  • Look into NICS or sleep consultancy if infant care interests you
  • Register with Ofsted – it gives you goals to work towards
  • Set one CPD goal for the next 12 months

CPD belongs in your nanny contract

If you’re a family employing a nanny, consider adding a CPD clause to your contract. A discretionary annual training budget of Β£150 to Β£250 is a modest investment that pays back significantly – a nanny who actively develops their skills is more confident, more capable, and more committed to their role.

For nannies, it’s absolutely worth raising this at interview or contract stage. A family that supports your professional development values you. And a small agreed budget removes the financial barrier that stops too many nannies from investing in themselves.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. A single line in the contract β€” “The Employer will contribute up to Β£[X] per year towards the Nanny’s professional development and training, subject to mutual agreement” β€” is enough to make it real.

CPD for nannies is not a luxury. It’s the difference between a career that stagnates and one that grows.

Drop us a message if you want to talk it through.

Experience takes you far. Experience + training takes you further.
