Should a nanny be self-employed or PAYE?

Typically, nannies are employed on a PAYE basis, however there are some exceptions.

A nanny can be self-employed only in rare circumstances—usually when working for multiple families, setting their own schedule, providing their own equipment, and having genuine autonomy in how the work is done.

In most standard arrangements, where a nanny works regular hours for a single family and follows the family’s direction, the nanny is legally considered an employee rather than self-employed.

What rights and benefits can I expect as a nanny?

A nanny under a PAYE arrangement will secure rights and protections at least inline with the wider UK workforce as they are protected by employment law.

Nannies should receive sick pay, holiday entitlement, and a fair salary according to location and experience. Ongoing training opportunities and discounted services, like Nanny Insurance, are available to our nannies.
