Top Tips for Nannying Twins from Twins Trust

Nannying is a rewarding job, but nannying twins?
Double the fun, double the strategy!
We’ve teamed up with the Twins Trust to get their insight on how nannies can better set themselves up for success when nannying twins. And this is worthwhile, as roles for twins are increasingly common; it often makes financial sense, compared to other forms of childcare, to bring a nanny into a household with twins.

Hello from the Twins Trust
Twins Trust is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to improving the lives and well-being of families with twins, triplets or more. Multiple birth families face unique challenges, and we’re there for them every step of the way.
Nannying Twins: That’s a whole new level of exciting (and occasionally exhausting).
Caring for two children of the same age presents unique challenges, but with the right strategies in place, you can create a smooth and joyful experience for everyone involved. Whether you’re new to twins or looking to gain more insight, here are some top tips to help you thrive while nannying twins.
1. Establish a Synchronised Routine
One of the golden rules for nannying twins is working towards keeping them on the same schedule. Feeding, naps, meals, and playtime should co-occur whenever possible. This reduces chaos, keeps things predictable, and gives you valuable moments of downtime when both children are napping or engaged in the same activity.

Be sure to discuss with the parents the importance of maintaining a consistent routine and adhering to it.
However, make sure you keep separate diaries for each child so you can report back to parents accurately.
2. When Nannying Twin, be organised and prepared
You always need to be one step ahead when nannying multiples. Having all the necessary equipment readily available is essential.
For example, when they are babies having the facility to change nappies in the same room as feeding and napping them means that you don’t have to leave one baby unattended at any point.
As they get older and start to move around, having a safe space to separate them can also help provide a calmer environment for everyone. When going out, choose child-friendly locations where you can safely supervise both children at the same time.
3. Nannying Twins and Mastering the Art of Multi-Tasking
When nannying twins, there’s always something going on—someone needs a nappy change while the other is hungry or crying. Learning to multitask effectively is essential.
However, this doesn’t mean doing everything at once, but rather knowing how to prioritise.

For example, if one baby is happily playing and the other is crying for food, tend to the hungry one first. Work on your strategies to remain calm and more efficient.
4. Encourage Individual Personalities
Even if they’re identical, twins are still two unique individuals.
Make time to observe and learn each child’s preferences, quirks, and developmental pace. Use their names often and encourage independent choices when appropriate.
This develops a sense of individuality and helps each child feel seen and valued.
5. When Nannying Twins Create a System for Fairness
Toddlers, especially, are quick to notice if one twin is getting more attention or a bigger slice of banana.
Set clear rules and use simple language to explain fairness. At the same time, remember that “fair” doesn’t always mean “identical.” Sometimes one child might need extra comfort or one-on-one time, and that’s okay too.
6. Ask for Help When Needed
Even the best nannies need backup. Don’t hesitate to communicate with the parents if you’re feeling overwhelmed or need guidance.

Check-ins can help everyone stay aligned regarding discipline, milestones, and expectations.
Teamwork makes a considerable difference when nannying twins. Finding local twin groups can also be a great source of support and understanding, as well as an opportunity for your charges to socialise with other multiples. Additionally, there is a wealth of support and advice available to you through the Twins Trust.
7. Stay Flexible and Laugh Often
Things won’t always go to plan—there will be spills, tantrums, and last-minute changes.
Flexibility is your friend. Embrace the unpredictability and keep a good sense of humour. Twins bring double the giggles, double the snuggles, and endless moments of joy. When you can laugh with them (and sometimes at the chaos), the whole experience becomes even more rewarding.
Nannying twins requires patience, organisation, and a passion, but it’s also one of the most joyful and fulfilling roles you can have. By creating structure, recognising individuality, and staying adaptable, you’ll not only survive but thrive in your role.
Good luck: Nannying Twins is a great skill set to develop.
We’re seeing an increasing number of nannying twins roles, so this is a great area to develop your skills.
